Technical description

Ukrainian Internet Exchange (UA-IX) is built on the equipment of Cisco Systems and Extreme Netwoks consists of the several switches (Catalyst WS-3560XL and BlackDiamond 8800) and two routers (Cisco 2811).

The Participants connect to the port of the nearest switch via Ethernet. Connection can be carried out on speeds 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1000Mbps, 10Gbps (connecting on speed 1000Mbps and 10 Gbps in optical port of the switch, the Participant must give the appropriate extansion module for setting up in the switch of the exchange point).

Routers (Cisco 2811) provide an exchange of routing tables within the Network. The protocol of the routing information exchange is BGP v4. Each Participant installs BGP session with both of route servers and transmits to the servers its network information. Further this information is distributed among other Participants, forming the field of routing within UA-IX. Both of route servers contain an identical configuration. Failing one of the route servers does not lead to infringement of work of the whole Network. Route servers don't allow announces of private Autonomous Systems. Filters on BGP sessions are based on information from RIPE database. Thus, each Participant must have its own Autonomous System, appropriate block of networks and correctly update the information about its interaction with UA-IX in RIPE database. That guarantees safety and transparency of UA-IX functioning.

There is also a server in UA-IX which provides granting the information about the current state of the Network (Looking Glass), and also the information about traffic in the Network (total and concerning each Participant). The server is built on the basis of PC with operation system Free BSD.

Switches, routers and server are operated by administration of UA-IX.
